The “Museo della Montagna” of Turin is a unique place within the city, offering a panoramic point from which to enjoy the urban and alpine scenery. The current building requires a complete rethinking, with the aim of improving the visitor experience and creating a cultural hub within the city’s museum system.

As for the master plan, it is necessary to implement the enhancements already outlined in the existing development plan. However, the current museum needs modernization to increase its accessibility and appeal.

The starting idea of the proposal is to connect all the building’s functions through a single vertical element, aimed at facilitating the flow and access to the various floors. This element will be located at the center of the building, which will be emptied of its current

structures. The new staircase and elevator will be conceptually hidden within a polygonal volume—the mountain—that will partially fill the void and allow access to all floors.

Verticality, recreating mountain environments such as the “exhibition crevasse,” panoramic terraces overlooking the courtyard’s exhibition walls, and reaching the top at the “refuge-bar” with views of the city and the Alps are design features aimed at enhancing the museum’s visitor experience.

Starting from the restaurant floor, which will be completely redesigned to make it accessible directly from the museum, visitors will ascend to the floor dedicated to temporary exhibitions and educational activities, which will include the hall of coats of arms and other learning spaces.

On the entrance floor, a bookshop has been added at the elevator landing, while the permanent exhibition remains largely unchanged, except for the exhibition crevasse, which will be located within the new mountain structure. On the first floor, the entire roof has been redesigned to solve current infiltration problems: the roof slopes facing the city will be restored, and from their ridge beam, a flat walkable roof will serve as the floor for a panoramic terrace. At this level, the current alpine lookout spaces will be occupied by a panoramic bar, making the entire floor available for events.

The new proposal will provide a new space for temporary exhibitions at the base of the mountain, along with a series of terraces from which the large exhibition walls of the central courtyard can be observed.
